Lightning did a lot of damage today on both sides of the bay. Two house fires were caused by lightning strikes. Thankfully, no one was hurt but it was definitely scary.

A lightning bolt made a direct hit on a home in West Mobile causing a fire. A quick thinking neighbor actually alerted the homeowners to the fire. They had no idea what was happening.

"I was like whooo," said Olivia Graham, a neighbor who saw the lightning bolt hit the home and start a fire. "I saw a lightning struck a tree. I mean the house. Then the tree went on it. It caught on fire and then it spreaded, it spreaded all over the house."

Mobile Fire-Rescue investigators were on scene for a few hours battling the blaze. They say they responded around 2:40 this afternoon. Nearby neighbors saw the blaze in real time.

I "didn't see anything until probably 10 minutes later, walked out of my house and saw the neighbors house on fire," a neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous said. "I ran over to the neighbors house then another neighbor met me at the front door."

He said the people who live in the home had no idea what was happening. In fact, he said one of the homeowners was upstairs and didn't even know. He came running down the stairs after his warning.

Thanks to the hero behind the anonymity, who said he was just being a good neighbor, they got out just fine. He said he wasn't concerned about his home, which is right next door, top priority was his neighbors' lives.

"Rang the door bell. Knocked on the door. They opened the door. We told them that their house was on fire. They weren't aware of it," he said. "All the neighbors in the neighborhood look out for everybody. We're a close knit neighborhood and we all try to take care of each other and look out for each other."

For the people in this community, helping each other comes second nature and they're not afraid to do it. Several neighbors were back and forth, in an out of the home after firefighters gave the all clear, helping conserve things of value.
