UPDATE: Mobile Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Dustin Massello. He's charged with attempting to elude and failure to obey.

A neighborhood dog and the summertime heat helped Mobile Police catch a suspect who ran after a traffic stop Wednesday.

The suspect tried his best to avoid capture, but man's best friend, the blazing heat, and some good police work saved the day.

It all started on Highway 90. Mobile Police said an officer pulled over the suspect for a switched tag. Investigators said the suspect got out leaving two passengers in the car. His next steps probably weren't the smartest, police said he ran into Crestview subdivision and that's where he met his match.

"I seen the guy up underneath the back porch and that's when I came out," said Darren Parker, the dog's owner. "My dog was on top of him."

The entire ordeal brought quite the scare for neighbors. Darren Parker said his dog bandit is one of the heroes. He slowed the suspect down for police.

"I chased him out of my backyard and that's when two police officers came up and asked where the young fellow was," Parker said.

Investigators tell us the suspect was under the influence and overheated. So it wasn't long before the suspect got tired from running up and down the street.

"At that time he was cutting through the neighbor's yard and then 10 minutes after that, they caught him 4 houses down," Parker explained.

The suspect was treated on the scene and then taken away for questioning. This one ended pretty fast, neighbors said it's all thanks to officers acting quickly and man's best friend.

"Not smokey, but the bandit," added Jerald Parker.

There's no word yet on who the suspect is or what charges he could face.
